USO Honors Our Nations Healing Heroes with Support of 2012 Warrior Games

The USO returns for a third straight year as a proud sponsor of the 2012 Warrior Games held in Colorado Springs, Colorado. This week long annual Olympic-style athletic competition for wounded, ill and injured service men and women from all branches of the military is a highlight of the USO catalog of support provided to our nations healing heroes and their caregivers.

The Warrior Games is an opportunity for the USO to demonstrate our commitment to supporting our nations healing heroes and their families, said Sloan Gibson, USO President. The USO supported them during their service at home and overseas and we will continue to be there for them as they transition to civilian society. The dedication and determination of these modern warriors is an inspiration to us all.

In addition to supporting the games and competing athletes, USO volunteers from the local Rocky Mountain USO handed out boxed lunches as well as hot sandwiches to the athletes and family members during todays shooting competition held at the U.S. Olympic Training Facility. The USO Mobile has also been onsite throughout the games to support athletes and their families with snacks, beverages and a support sign station for fans to make signs for their favorite athletes.

Many people associate the USO with support for our nations forward deployed troops- through our entertainment tours and our nine centers located throughout Afghanistan, said Susan Thomas, VP, Warrior and Family Care. Support for those deployed troops and our nations military families is paramount, but the USO also sees a huge need to support our returning warriors as they transition to civilian society. Our support for events like Warrior Games as well as other our other initiatives and partnerships like those that provide wounded with the tools to successfully transition to the civilian workforce and our support for the caregivers is also so vital to the ability for these healing heroes to generate hope for the future.

The event, organized and led by the U.S. Olympic Committee, is also supported by the Department of Defense, Deloitte, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the Fisher House Foundation, the Daniels Fund, AT&T, BP, DeVry, Anheuser Busch and Chobani.

220 wounded, ill and injured service men and women from the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Special Operations Command, and United Kingdom Armed Forces will compete in events such as archery, cycling, wheelchair basketball, shooting, swimming, track & field and sitting volleyball. Athletes with disabilities including – amputations, spinal cord injuries, post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury (this category also includes cerebral palsy and stroke) are eligible. Earlier in the year, participants competed in order to be selected by each individual branch of service on an invitation-only basis based on disability. State Farm Sponsors Premiere Event for Non Profit, Miles Against Melanoma

Jim Shields of State Farm has been a big community supporter for over 20 years, sponsoring many causes in the Charlotte and Matthews area, including the Special Olympics, Youth Leagues, YMCA programs, as well as coaching softball and basketball teams at Matthews Athletic and Recreation Association. Miles Against Melanoma was chosen this year to help raise awareness and to help fund research, as no one is immune to Melanoma.

Heather Joyner, creator of the Miles Against Melanoma NC Chapter, said, Miles Against Melanoma NC would like to thank the Jim Shields State Farm Insurance office for their support. Their contribution will help us achieve our goal of increasing melanoma awareness and raising funds for research.

Amy Jo Ross Robinson was first diagnosed with melanoma when she was just a junior in high school, after a biopsy was performed on a mole she had removed. She had surgery to remove the lymph nodes from the surrounding area and she was in remission for over 10 years until it came back in her lungs and eventually took her life. Amy was only 30 years old when she died. Miles Against Melanoma NC is dedicated to raising the public’s awareness of melanoma and raising funds for research so no one else will have to suffer like Amy.

The event takes place on April 28, 2012 at the Arboretum Shopping Center at the corner of Hwy 51 & Providence Road. First Olympic Torchbearer for Greek Leg of Relay Revealed

The Hellenic Olympic Committee (HOC) has announced details of the Greek leg of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay, including confirmation of the very first Torchbearer.

Running from 1017 May, the 3,000km Relay will see the Olympic Flame pass through 34 cities and be carried by 500 people.

HOC has announced that Greece’s British-born 10km swimming world champion Spyros Gianniotis will have the honour of being the very first Torchbearer.

Expected to be a major contender for a medal at London 2012, Gianniotis has declared that ‘swimming in London will be like swimming at home’.

Relay route

On 10 May, a ceremony will be held at the Temple of Hera in Ancient Olympia, where the Flame will be lit using the sun’s rays. It will then begin its journey across Greece, travelling to the island of Crete before going to Piraeus, Thessalonica, Xanthi and Larissa among many other communities.

The Flame will arrive in the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens site of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 on 17 May, where the Flame will be given to the London 2012 delegation.

When the Olympic Flame arrives in the UK on 18 May, it will travel on a 70-day journey around the country on its way to the Opening Ceremony of London 2012 on 27 July.

Sunset magazine announces the winners of its 2012 Environmental Awards in the pages of its March issue. These awards celebrate the achievements of the people and organizations that are fighting to keep the West at its most pristine and beautiful. Best of all, nearly all of the award-winning lands can be visited by the public right now.

The projects and people we honor this year are outstanding in every way, said Peter Fish, Sunset editor-at-large. We received massive amounts of emails nominating candidates and almost all were very good, so it was a difficult choice.

Sunset editors searched the West for the winners, concentrating on newly protected land. Awards were given in categories such as Best Wild Kingdom, which celebrates one of the nations biggest private conservation land purchases, Best Shoreline, and Capital of Green, which was awarded to Washingtons Olympic Peninsula for two separate projects that preserve beautiful rivers and forests. The magazines editors and an esteemed panel of judges also honor Education Programs and Visitor Centers helping to promote ongoing interaction with and appreciation of the environment.

The recession has had a silver lining when it comes to the environment, continued Fish, who served as one of the award programs judges. Land development and competition from real estate developers is down, meaning that land trusts have a better chance of obtaining and protecting land.

Campaign for Disability Employment Announces Nationwide Video Contest

Today, the Campaign for Disability Employment (CDE), a collaboration by leading disability and business organizations funded by the U.S. Department of Labors Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP), announced the launch of its second nationwide video contest to promote the talent and skills that people with disabilities bring to Americas workforce and economy. A follow-up to a similar contest held in 2009, this years competition seeks videos in several categories to supplement the CDEs award-winning What can YOU do? public education efforts.

Every day, people with disabilities can and do add value to Americas workplaces and economy. However, in both good economic times and bad, people with disabilities have far fewer job opportunities than the general population. Built around a coordinated outreach effort titled What can YOU do?, the CDE promotes the hiring, retention and advancement of people with disabilities through public service announcements, educational materials and other grass-roots outreach activities.????

Our video contest is an opportunity for filmmakers of all ages to convey positive messages about the value people with disabilities add to the workforce and to help viewers re-think their negative assumptions about people with disabilities in the workforce, said Tracie Saab, Campaign for Disability Employment project director. About the What can YOU do? Video Contest

The CDE is looking for creative, fun, compelling videos of all genres that reflect the diversity of skills that people with disabilities offer, challenge misconceptions about disability and employment, and/or highlight employers inclusive employment programs and practices. The CDE will recognize winners in up to three specific categories (General Public, Youth and Employer), and the public will be encouraged to select a Peoples Choice winner.

Individual and group entries are encouraged. Applicants must be U.S. citizens to enter.

MVS Predicts Extremely Volatile Year in Financial Markets

In the letter, posted on the Darien-based Investment Firm’s website, Mr.Olympitis points out that the firm views four themes as directing the behavior of the markets in the coming year: The crisis in Europe, the behavior of fixed income markets, unsustainable government and consumer borrowing and the US Election.

The firm sees a downside of around 900 on the S&P 500 on the “very real scenario of a default within the Euro Zone”, but predicts that such an episode would “spur Germany into action” on issuing Euro Bonds and that markets would recover most of their losses steadily over the proceeding months if that were to happen.

Other takeaways from the letter include worries about the “equity-like performance expectations” in the bond market and the argument that only a Republican sweep in all three elected branches of government would be a net positive for the financial markets.
